An apostille is an official certification that authenticates a public document so it can be legally recognized in other countries. If you need to use a U.S. document abroad — for marriage, immigration, school enrollment, business, or any official purpose — it almost certainly needs an apostille first.
Florida apostilles are recognized by all countries that have signed the Hague Convention of 1961 — over 120 countries worldwide, including Mexico, most of Europe, and South America.
How the Florida Apostille Process Works
State Documents vs. Federal Documents — What's the Difference?
This is one of the most common sources of confusion with apostilles — and sending your document to the wrong office will cause delays.
Florida state documents (birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, notarized documents) are processed through the Florida Department of State in Tallahassee.
Federal documents (FBI background checks, federal court records, documents signed by federal officials) must go through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.
We know exactly where to send every document type — so you don't have to worry about it.
